I've finally finished my first set of abstract paintings, and they're now in a gallery in Florida.
This is one of the 20 i've done so far.

Being that i'm new to acrylics, [wet paint for that matter], and still trying to figure things out -[lots of trials & errors].. I attempted to paint a portrait starting with an underpainting, then smearing paint on top of that with my fingers mostly, and brushes..
but I'm now wondering if next time around I could start with a grisaille drawing using watercolor pencils, then on top of that I could paint.. [anyone ever tried painting over a watercolor pencil drawing? is that any good to do?]
Unfinished painting - Acrylic on paper
So I am hoping somebody can help me. I am trying to achieve a glass-like finish on my acrylic painting. I've been told you can mix galkyd with some other glaze medium and layer it, but I want to know for sure. So, if any of you know what I'm talking about, how do I achieve this look? Thanks in advance!

It's just recently I've been experimenting with the wet media [acrylic paint etc]., so i'm still figuring stuff out..
I think i'm getting the knack of painting oceanscapes now, i'm definitely improving, and so far this one isn't fighting me that much..
But I do have a question about applying Gesso..
I thought the gesso would go on smoothely if I use a roller brush [with the sponge], but it dries to a rigid surface.. not smoothe at all..
Do I have to sand the surface after the Gesso is dry then?
Unfinished painting - Acrylic on board
I am trying painting to add to my..."portfolio". I usually work with charcoal, pencil, or conte, and I seem to be good at that. I am having quite a hard time painting. I am going to post the painting I spent 3 days on. It is supposed to be a sort of surreal tree. Here are my questions: What do you think of it in general? I am using acrylic on canvas..I am having a very hard time working with the paint because it doesn't make a clean line for me. The paint isn't smooth at all and lumps up and dries pretty quickly. Even my signature looks horrible! What could I do or add to the paint? I realize now after completing this that I should have painted the sky before the tree, because in between the branches looks bad and took forever. I had no patience at all to go back and fix it. Please, any advice at all or comments are hugely appreciated! Thank you!
Hi! I'm new to the community and new to journaling. My name is Melvin and I am retired from the U.S. military. I took up acrylic paintings as a hobby and I've really come to enjoy it. My wife likes my paintings. She has them hanging all over the house. I'd really like opinions from others though, especially other artists. I'm sorry about the quality of the pictures. My digital camera is very old and some of the photos look blurry. Let me know what you think.
Thanks( my acrylic paintingsCollapse )

Hi all, it's summer, and I feel like I'm working in a vacuum. Any feedback would be welcome.
This is a work in progress--the middle panel of seven, and the largest. About 20" x 9".
